Community Lokahi to Enrich our Aina Now

On Saturday, August 28, 2010, several groups from the community including the Boys & Girls Club, Kapolei High School, Lions Club, Weed & Seed, Word of Life and Hope Chapel Kapolei joined together for “Project C.L.E.A.N. (Community Lokahi to Enrich our Aina Now).” Hosted by the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), many policemen were there volunteering their time for this project and providing coffee and refreshments for the volunteers. Each of the groups took a section of the city, whether it was painting bus stops or picking up rubbish. Hope Chapel Kapolei was in charge of painting the skate park. Mayor Kirk Caldwell and Chief Louis Kealoha of HPD stopped by to personally thank volunteers for taking the time to paint over the graffiti in the skate park. Kapolei is the third clean up initiative with the HPD after starting with Waipahu and Chinatown. Chief Kealoha shared how painting and cleaning the community helps people to sleep at night. Everyone wants to know that their families are safe. This shows that the citizens of Kapolei care about their community. This is something that needs to be continued and maintained. Much mahalo to Sergeant Tony Pacheco for providing the paint and some painting supplies. A special thank you to all the HCK volunteers that came out to show Kapolei that HCK cares!

My husband Daniel and I have been attending Hope Chapel Kapolei for about a year. We are both in the same battalion in the armed forces and we love our country. Since November of 2009 we’ve been training for our deployment to Iraq on our last year‐long mission. In preparation for deployment, there were medical standards that both of us had to reach so that we could “fly” out. On the Monday before leaving on my last deployment, I had an appointment at Tripler Army Medical Center where they ran an MRI of my breast. That next Saturday, we were ready to leave for another year with all of our bags packed until I received a phone call from the head of General Surgery at Tripler who told me I couldn’t get on this flight. He explained to my command that the results from my MRI look like cancer. Daniel and I were told to grab my bags and be at the hospital as soon as possible. Two days later I had a core biopsy which came back to show that I had developed Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia, thus resulting in a scheduled lumpectomy. After having many hands laid on me in prayer, I went into the surgery a week and a half later. Throughout this experience, I was reassured by God that the cancer was gone and a week later I received the results. After all the science pointed to me having cancer, the results came back negative. Through this, I was able to share God’s word with my sister‐in‐law and feel God’s true comforting power. Thank you so much to my Hope Chapel Kapolei ohana for all the prayers and love poured out to Daniel and I. We can’t express our gratitude enough.

“Dont Be Afraid of the Thorns”

August 3, 2010 marked a milestone in our marriage-25 years of marriage! 25 years of choosing to stay committed, choosing to stay true to the vows we made to each other on our wedding day and choosing to stay in love. Someone once said to me “Nothing is always roses. It’s full of thorns too.” In my experience the roses were in full bloom when everything was running smoothly. The love tank is full, careers thriving, the kids are doing well and the finances are in order. Then out of nowhere the unexpected happens; loss of a family member, hating the new job, bills piling high, the horror of your kids’ “teenage” years are in full swing. You’ve made some bad decisions and your love tank is running on empty. Talking leads to arguing, arguing leads to silence and silence leads to distance. You feel the pain of the thorns. You’re bleeding and you don’t know how to stop it. You’re longing for your spouse to kiss your “booboo” (your broken heart), bandage you up and tell you that it’ll be okay but instead, you’re hit with the one liner…. “What do you want me to do?” Well, I’ll tell you what to do! Remember your vows. Remember why you fell in love. Remember the good times. Remember how you kissed you child’s “booboo” to make them feel better and do it for your spouse. Apologize. Choose not to fight or stay angry. Choose to love. Choose to remain. Choose to work it out. Choose to be selfless rather than selfish. Choose to please rather than desiring to be pleased. Choose to forgive. Pray, pray and pray! Ask God to give you a new heart of love for your spouse. Ask God to help you love your spouse more today than yesterday. Ask God to help your spouse to love you more today than yesterday. Ask God to guard your marriage. Ask God to bless your marriage. Make God the center of your marriage.
After 25 years of marriage, I now realize that the statement “nothing is always roses” holds true. I have found that our marriage was most enriched during the seasons of thorns. So hold onto love. Hold onto marriage. Remain committed and don’t be afraid of the thorns!

“Take Courage”

“During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Matthew 14:25-27
Being afraid is such a huge hurdle to get over, and it is one of the top reason or culprits why we “don’t get off the boat.”
According to Wikipedia, “Michael Jordan tried out for the varsity basketball team during his sophomore year, but at 5′11″ (1.80 m), he was deemed too short to play at that level. Motivated by not being afraid, Jordan became the star of Laney’s junior varsity squad, and tallied several 40 point games. The following summer, he grew four inches (10 cm) and trained rigorously. Upon earning a spot on the varsity roster, Jordan averaged about 20 points per game over his final two seasons of high school play. As a senior, he was selected to the McDonald’s All-American Team after averaging a triple-double: 29.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 10.1 assists.” We know of all his accolades, awards, and championships, but we probably didn’t know that he would not be the basketball great of all time if he was afraid to continue after being cut from the varsity basketball team.
In the baseball community, “Reggie Jackson is known for his home-run hitting abilities. He ranks in the top ten of all time home-run hitters, and is called “Mister October” for being a clutch hitter in the championship games.” (Wikipedia) However, the one thing that we might not know is he led the league four years in a row for the most strike-outs (1968-1971). Leading the league in strike outs is not a good award to have as a batter. However, Reggie Jackson kept hacking away at pitches thrown at him, and he was not afraid to keep swinging for the fence making him one of the great home-run hitters of all time.
In the bible, imagine what Peter was going through when he saw Jesus walking on water? Honestly, I’d be afraid and scared to see something like what Peter seen. I think I would be curled up in a ball, covering my face with my hands, yet peeking through my fingers. Or, I’d be like the other disciples, and question Peter as to why in the world is he trying to get out of the boat, and walk on water? Despite being afraid, Peter walked on water just to get to Jesus. After taking several steps toward Him, Peter’s focus was lost, and he began to sink in the water. “Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”, Matthew 14: 31.
In conclusion, I will not be afraid to step out in faith. Risk and failures are stepping stones to success. Michael Jordan, Reggie Jackson, and Peter could have sat in the boat and been afraid. Yet, Michael was focused to make the varsity basketball team, Reggie kept swinging away despite missing at balls pitched to him, and Peter stepped off the boat when Jesus was calling him to “come.” They risked fear and humility, but they stepped out of the boat in faith to do something. God responds to faith, and not your needs.
Is Jesus calling you to get out of the boat, and come to him? What are you afraid of that you can’t step out of the boat?
